Becoming a Referee

From local park football on a Sunday morning to the FA Cup Final, all football needs referees. With over 700 registered referees officiating all across Staffordshire, we provide the support and experience for you to help progress your skills as far as you want. Whether you aspire to officiate on the Premiership or to referee the local U9's team, we can provide you with the support, training and resources to assist you in achieving your goal.

Who can become a referee?

Anyone over the age of 14 can become a referee. All that is required is a passion for the game and the successful completion of a training course. Many of our existing referees started on courses organised by Staffordshire FA. If you have just finished playing and you want to give something back to the game or if you wish to start a career in refereeing, then please read on!

Basic Referee Courses

These are held throughout the year and will involve approximately 20 hours of training followed by a test on practical issues of refereeing plus a written exam on the Laws of association football. On passing the examinations, you become a Level 9 trainee referee. Following the course you will need to referee 6 11v11 games or 6 9v9 games to obtain qualified status - during this period you will have the services of a mentor to guide you through your opening games. You will also be requested to attend a module 5 meeting.

YOUR QUALIFICATION IS NOT COMPLETE UNTIL THIS HAS BEEN UNDERTAKEN

Full details will be provided on the course

The cost of the course for all age groups is £110 and includes the following:
