CHALLENGE CUP MATCH REPORT

Pelsall Villa Colts secured the Challenge Cup title after edging a tight contest 2-1 against Mayfield FC.

The game got off to an electrifying start with both sides creating early chances. Pelsall came close to taking the lead on 13 minutes when Matthews headed just over the bar from a cross on the left-hand side.

Pelsall thought they had taken the lead midway through the first half after Spragg headed in a corner at the back post, but the goal was disallowed for a push on a Mayfield player.

However, Pelsall did take the lead on 18 minutes. The ball was whipped into the six-yard box, and despite a brilliant save from the Mayfield keeper, Porter was on hand to tap in and give Pelsall the lead.

The rest of the half saw Pelsall enjoying more possession, but Mayfield looked dangerous on the break.

The second half was a quieter affair until the 63rd minute when Mayfield scored a shock equaliser. Harry Breeze's effort beat the Pelsall keeper at his near post to level the scores.

But disaster struck for Mayfield with just 14 minutes remaining as Lyon, the Mayfield goalkeeper, lost control of the ball after trying to fake a throw. Matthews was on hand to tap into an empty net and restore Pelsall's lead.

Mayfield pushed hard for an equaliser in the dying moments of the game and came close in the fifth minute of injury time when a shot from the edge of the area sailed over the bar.

The final whistle blew shortly after, and Pelsall Villa Colts held on for a hard-fought 2-1 victory to progress to the next round of the Challenge Cup.
