Match Report: AFC Cheslyn Hay 5-1 Uttoxeter Town

Staffordshire FA Sam Kimberley Trophy Final

AFC Cheslyn Hay 5-1 Uttoxeter Town
Thursday 4 April 2019
Silkmore Lane Sports Ground, Brocton FC

Once again we headed to Brocton for the Sam Kimberley Trophy Final, with Southern section winners AFC Cheslyn Hay facing Northern section winners Uttoxeter Town.

The wind and rain made conditions tricky for both sides and it was no surprise that first half chances were at a premium, although both sides were getting the ball down and trying to play the right way - so chances were bound to come.

Uttoxeter had claims for a handball outside the area when Cheslyn Hay’ s ‘keeper Shaun Horan raced from his goal to intercept a through ball, but the referee waved away any appeals that the ball struck his upper arm and play continued.

Midway through the half it was Cheslyn Hay who began to take a grip of the game and, after a couple of near misses, they took the lead from the penalty spot when Dyllan Hill converted following a foul in the box.

Uttoxeter ‘keeper James Moss had made a couple of good saves to keep the score at 1-0, but his mis-kick allowed Cheslyn Hay to double their lead at the break, with Callum Drewfield taking full advantage of the error.

Any hopes of a comeback were dashed early in the second half when Connor Morris saw his shot take a deflection and Moss could only watch as the ball looped over him and into the net for a 3-0 lead.

Shortly after it was 4-0 when Hill bagged his second penalty of the night after Moss in the Uttoxeter goal was adjudged to have committed a foul. With Cheslyn Hay striking the woodwork shortly after, it was soon becoming a damage limitation exercise for Uttoxeter.

With 10 minutes to go, Uttoxeter were reduced to 10 men when Brad Ede was shown a red card but in the closing moments they pulled a goal back with skipper Evan Richardson poking the ball home from close range following a corner.

Almost immediately the four goal lead was restored, when Jack Thomas finished neatly from inside the box to complete the 5-1 scoreline.

Congratulations to both teams for reaching the final of this season’s competition and to AFC Cheslyn Hay, who lifted the trophy to claim the title of Sam Kimberley Trophy Champions!
